About

I am Abhijeet Borkar, an Astrophysicist currently working as a post-doctorate researcher at the Astronomy Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. I completed my Ph.D. in Astrophysics from the University of Cologne, Germany, where I was also part of the International Max Planck Research School at the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany. Born and brought up in Pune, India, I finished my B.Sc. in Physics from Fergusson College, Pune, India and M.Sc. from the University of Pune, India with specialization in Advanced Quantum Mechanics.

At the Astronomical Institute of CAS, I am working as a contact scientist for the Czech Node of the European ALMA Regional Center. It involves user support for observers for scheduling observations and data reduction, data quality assurance, and public outreach. Along with this, I am also working on the study of charged dust in the vicinity of active galactic nuclei.

The topic of my PhD thesis was the study of the super massive black hole (SMBH) at the center of the Milky Way galaxy at 3 millimeter wavelength, where I studied (1) the flaring activity of Sagittarius A*, the radio source associated with the SMBH (see: publication), and (2) the SiO maser sources in the central parsec of the SMBH. The details about the projects, and the pdf of my PhD thesis can be found here

My research interests include Sagittarius A* and the Galactic Center Environment, dust around AGN, the AGN-host relation & evolution, cosmic archaeology, formation of first objects in the Universe (first stars, first galaxies, first black holes), radio interferometry etc.
